A magnificent example of early 20th-century American craftsmanship, this Brunswick "Rochester" pool table represents one of the most sought-after designs from the golden age of billiards. Manufactured circa 1906 by the legendary Brunswick-Balke-Collender Company.
The Rochester model was introduced as a modification of the celebrated Pfister style and quickly gained prominence in America's finest billiard rooms. As noted in period Brunswick catalogs, the Rochester was "absolutely devoid of carved ornamentations or mouldings," relying instead on the beauty of its woods and the purity of its lines—embodying the Arts & Crafts philosophy that puts it "in a class by itself as one of the most artistic billiard tables ever produced." Design patent awarded January 1, 1895.
MATERIALS & CONSTRUCTION
This exceptional table features natural oil finish African Mahogany frame and base—a premium selection showcasing rich, warm tones and beautiful grain patterns. African Mahogany was reserved for Brunswick's finest tables, prized for its stability and luxurious appearance.
The rails are Brazilian Rosewood with Monarch cushions, providing both visual drama and optimal playing characteristics. The exotic rosewood delivers consistent, responsive ball action.
The playing surface features professional-grade 3-piece slate construction (1" thick), ensuring a perfectly level, tournament-quality playing field. Currently dressed in Tournament Rapid Titan cloth in turquoise (can be changed during installation to any color).
The table retains its original Brunswick-Balke-Collender Company brass nameplate—a coveted detail confirming authenticity and provenance. Leather-webbed pockets provide classic aesthetics and quiet ball collection.
Substantial pedestal-style legs in matching African Mahogany feature compound construction with various woods tongued and grooved together for maximum stability and longevity.
RESTORATION & PROVENANCE

• Certified labor by Brunswick specialists
The table has been meticulously maintained in a private residence since restoration and shows only light use. Minor blemishes on the underside as shown in photographs.

HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE
The Rochester model represents Brunswick's response to the Arts & Crafts movement's influence on American furniture design. Produced under various patents granted from 1892 to 1905, these tables were featured in "a majority of the largest and finest billiard rooms of the United States" according to period Brunswick catalogs.
Brunswick-Balke-Collender Company, established in 1845, was—and remains—the world's premier pool table manufacturer. Early Brunswick tables are increasingly rare and sought after by collectors, designers, and serious players alike. The company's tables were chosen for championship tournaments and installed in the finest hotels, clubs, and private residences across America.
CONDITION
Very Very Good. The table displays beautiful patina consistent with its 118-year history. The African Mahogany retains its rich luster, and the Brazilian Rosewood rails show the warm tones characteristic of aged exotic wood. The cloth is in excellent condition with minimal wear. Some light surface marks on the rails are typical of use and entirely appropriate to the table's age—these are badges of authenticity, not defects. The table is fully playable and maintains complete structural integrity. All pockets, cushions, and playing surface are in excellent working condition.
PERFECT FOR
• Serious billiards enthusiasts seeking tournament-quality play
• Collectors of American antique furniture and Brunswick heritage pieces
• Interior designers creating distinguished spaces for discerning clients
• Game room connoisseurs who appreciate craftsmanship and history
• Anyone seeking a lifetime heirloom piece that combines beauty and function
SHIPPING & INSTALLATION
Due to the specialized nature of pool table transportation, professional disassembly, moving, and reinstallation are required. This is standard for all regulation-size pool tables and protects both the table and ensures proper setup.
The table disassembles into manageable sections for transport. Each section can be carefully packed for shipping. Professional pool table movers have specialized equipment and expertise for this work.
Buyer is responsible for all shipping, moving, and installation costs. We can recommend qualified Brunswick-certified installers in the San Francisco Bay area. Typical professional moving costs range from $650 up depending on distance and complexity.
Serious buyers in the San Francisco Bay Area are welcome to arrange viewing by appointment.
INVESTMENT VALUE
This Brunswick Rochester represents a rare opportunity to acquire an authentic piece of American billiard history. The combination of premium African Mahogany (not common oak), Brazilian Rosewood, documented professional restoration, and complete accessory package makes this table suitable for both serious play and as a stunning centerpiece for a distinguished game room, library, or entertainment space.
The clean, architectural lines of the Rochester design allow it to complement both traditional and contemporary interiors. This is furniture as art—a conversation piece with genuine historical significance.
With original Brunswick tables from this era becoming increasingly scarce, this is both an investment in quality craftsmanship and a piece that will appreciate over time.
