France, circa 1770–1787
Original etching with aquatint on paper by Jean-Pierre-Louis Houël (1735–1813)
This finely detailed 18th-century French print depicts the Temple of Karnak at Luxor, presenting a monumental architectural elevation accompanied by a ground plan inset, reflecting the Enlightenment-era scholarly approach to antiquity and early archaeological documentation. Carefully rendered figures animate the scene and provide a sense of scale, emphasizing the immense grandeur of the ancient structure.
The plate is inscribed “Dessiné par J. Houel” and titled “Coupé d’un très beau réservoir à Louxor.” Works of this type were produced during the height of European fascination with Egypt in the late 18th century, culminating in the period surrounding Napoleon’s Egyptian campaign and the birth of modern Egyptology.
Presented in a custom black wood frame with gilt beaded liner, neutral matting, archival mounting, and glass.
