Designer Elio Martinelli
Elio Martinelli was born on 19 November 1922, a unique son of Pliny and his wife Emilia, a model among the most notes of the city of Lucca, which probably sent him the artistic vein. After a childhood and adolescence spent in Lucca with those companions who would then have been friends ever, he undertook scenography studies in Florence where he graduated. Substained in family activity after the premature loss of the father realized how his interests were different and more projected towards creativity. It therefore began a collaboration with a Lucca company for which the interior design for public places was treated. Dissatisfied with the type of lighting devices then available (we were in the immediate post-war period), he began to draw and produce the lamps to be included in his projects. Thus the light martinelli was born, in a basement located in Piazza Bernardini in Lucca, which was accessed via a trapse and a ladder and where, with difficulty, the few tools needed to a small production had been installed. "Laboratory" called him Elio and here many ideas have developed. Brave Elio Martinelli and who had believed in him, the workers and a friend who had given him the little money necessary to leave, since the banks had denied him the credit. In the meantime it is bridged in 1949 with Anna, a life companion and inspirational muse, and together they start to travel first Italy and then Europe participating in the most important exhibitions of that period, but is with the first edition of the Eurodomus In Genoa in 1966 and the meeting with Giò Ponti that Elio Martinelli and his company acquired an international relief. In his professional life Elio Martinelli has designed many lamps and to realize some of these had to study new methacrylate molding techniques. We are in the 1960s, a period of claiming the innovative and revolutionary plastic materials and precisely the most representative lamps of its production have been built. Attention to technology and novelty has always characterized the interest of Elio Martinelli, not only for the materials of which the lamps were made, but also for the use of new light sources. The classic light bulb since the 1970s is increasingly replaced by halogen lamps and metal halides that lead to a real revolution in the lighting of commercial spaces. We are at the beginning of the 1980s when Elio Martinelli designs its first technical devices collected in a specific catalog called 'Systems ". It is precisely in these years that the Emilian daughter enters the company, interested initially predominantly at the graphic part to then move on to the design. Thus we reach the 1990s, Martinelli Luce has a consolidated role in the panorama of the producing industries of illuminating appliances and given the difficulties of the internal market it is even more projuveners and towards the lighting of large commercial spaces even with productions dedicated to Contract. Elio Martinelli disappears on October 21, 2004 after a disease that had forced him in recent years to even stay away from that creature to whom all his thoughts were addressed.
