A rare and expressive vintage Japanese Hakata doll depicting a child performer in the traditional Shishi-mai (lion dance), a ceremonial ritual meant to ward off evil and invite good fortune. This hand-painted ceramic figure was specially made for Gump’s, the renowned San Francisco retailer known for curating fine Asian art.
The child wears a vibrant blue kimono with gold and white floral detailing and holds a fierce orange lion mask overhead. The mask features gold teeth, black accents, and a tufted mane, while the performer’s cloak is adorned with circular emblems. The figure is seated in a dynamic pose, legs spread, suggesting movement and ritual readiness.
Crafted in the Hakata Ningyō tradition, this piece reflects the artistry of Fukuoka’s ceramic heritage and the cultural symbolism of Japanese festivals. It rests on a black circular base, with inscriptions and display ports visible on some versions (see photos).
