The Thebes stool, originating from the late 19th century and designed by Leonard Wyburd for Liberty & Co., is a timeless furniture piece inspired by Egyptian-style aesthetics.
Initially crafted by William Birch or B.North & Sons, the stool’s design was patented by Liberty in 1884, and it continued to be retailed until about 1919. Despite its early creation, it gained widespread popularity after the 1922 discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb, sparking a renewed interest in ancient Egyptian motifs.
This unique stool boasts a curved seat and legs reminiscent of ancient Egyptian furniture, constructed from durable materials like wood and rope. Boasting great craftsmanship, no screws or glue were used to build these stools. And they stack beautifully for storage (shown in images).
Highly regarded for their aesthetic appeal and practicality, the Thebes stools remain a sought-after item for collectors and can be found in both museums and private collections worldwide. The enduring legacy of the Thebes stool underscores its status as a symbol of enduring craftsmanship and timeless design, cherished by enthusiasts for over a century.
Examples of these stools from Liberty & Co. can be seen in the book: 'Liberty's Furniture 1875-1915, The Birth of Modern Interior Design' by Daryl Bennett, pages 25,96,97 etc.
Stacked dimensions: 33.75”H x 21” sq.

A few connections between the legs and the stretchers appear to have been glued together a very long time ago, but this isn't very noticeable. There is some light staining to the rope, which also seems quite old and does not detract from the overall look. One of the stools has some added string/knots to the seat. All repairs seem quite old and remain stable, and they are in remarkable shape considering their age and purpose for use. Also of note...this set of four has likely been together since they were made, as they share the same coloring & patina throughout. Certainly, a rarity for a large set. less
