The Bald Head Roller is both a show pigeon and a performance pigeon. Roller pigeon breeds do backward somersaults in flight and are prized for this behaviour. The "bald head" in their name refers to the solid colour plumage (almost always white) on their head in contrast to their body and wing feathers which come in a wide variety from black to red.

This work is part of Brendan Burden's Fancy Pigeons series. This series explores the unexpected and often under-appreciated beauty of the lowly pigeon. Through the use of formal portrait techniques, the pigeon is presented with an esteem normally reserved for less humble subjects. This unconventional contrast provides a new perspective on something many people see every day and give little consideration to.
