Anglo-Chinese Grandeur: Pair of Barr, Flight & Barr Worcester Porcelain Serving Dishes
Circa 1804–1813
Description: A magnificent pair of exceptionally large oval serving dishes produced by the prestigious Barr, Flight & Barr factory in Worcester (Circa 1804–1813). These pieces were commissioned as high-quality replacements for an 18th-century Chinese Export porcelain dinner service, showcasing the Regency practice of "matching up" English wares to cherished imported sets.
The decoration faithfully replicates a classic Qianlong-period design from the 1760s. The rim features an intricate iron-red and gilt spearhead border, framed by a simple gold band. The central well is hand-painted with vibrant, scattered floral sprays in the Famille Rose palette, dominated by large, lush pink peonies and stylized blooms. The white porcelain body is crisp and refined, demonstrating the technical superiority of early 19th-century English manufacture.
Markings:
Impressed Mark: The underside bears the impressed factory mark of a Crown over "BFB", dating the pieces to the 1804–1813 period.
Size Mark: A scratch-incised "12" denotes the size category.
Condition: Excellent antique condition. The enamels remain vivid and the gilding is well-preserved. No chips, cracks, or restoration.
Note: A single matching 12-inch dish from this same service is also available.
Measurements:
Width: 20 1/4 inches (51.4 cm)
Depth: 15 inches (38.1 cm)
Height: 1 1/2 inches (3.8 cm)
Historical Context:
During the Napoleonic Wars, imports from China were often disrupted or heavily taxed. Wealthy British families turned to premier domestic factories like Worcester, Spode, and Derby to create additions or replacements for their existing Chinese porcelain services. This pair exemplifies the "replacement" genre at its finest, where English potting excellence meets Chinese decorative tradition.
