This abstract composition features bold brushstrokes and highly contrasting colors. A large red circle dominates the center of the canvas. It is overlapped by bold black linework, rendered with visible brushstrokes. Behind this red circle is a deep blue background, adding to the sense of contrast and depth. The circle is bracketed by more bold linework and geometric areas of blue-tinted grey paint. Reminiscent of Kandinsky, Hofmann and Amy Sillman, the piece celebrates the interplay of spontaneity and structure within a modernist vocabulary.

Ellis Hopkins (American, b. 1952) was born in Lawrence, Kansas, but spent most of her life in California. She lived in Monterey and Carmel Valley, where she was a prolific painter, focusing mostly on gestural abstraction, color blocking, and abstracted still lifes. She studied at the Carmel Art Institute.
