This striking matching pair of antique moth engravings originates from Parts 3–4 of the rare third and final series of 'Nederlandsche Vlinders', published in The Hague by Martinus Nijhoff between 1905 and 1913 under the direction of A. Brants. This series forms the concluding chapter of the historic Sepp tradition in Dutch entomological illustration, a project that began in 1728 and set European standards for scientific insect imagery. The two plates illustrate Sciapteron Tabaniformis and Xystophora Divisella, each shown through their complete life cycles with exceptional precision. Adults, larvae, pupae, eggs, and host plant structures are rendered in finely balanced compositions that combine scientific clarity with artistic refinement. The transparent original hand coloring enhances the natural tones of wings, bodies, and foliage with remarkable subtlety and depth.
This offering includes both original hand-colored copper engravings together with the complete original printed text leaves from Parts 3–4, preserving the essential connection between image and scientific documentation. The material comes from the library of the distinguished Dutch lepidopterist Jan Hendrik Ernst Wittpen (1878–1956), identifiable by his library stamp, adding important scholarly provenance. The third series of Nederlandsche Vlinders is significantly scarcer than the earlier Sepp volumes and is especially valued by collectors of natural history, scientific illustration, and museum-quality decorative art. As a paired diptych, these two plates offer a refined and slightly more dynamic visual rhythm than butterfly subjects, making them particularly appealing for modern interiors, libraries, and curated gallery walls.
Condition report Both engravings and accompanying text leaves are in excellent, near-mint condition. Clean impressions, beautifully preserved original hand coloring, strong visible plate marks, no foxing, no tears, no stains. Overall preservation is outstanding.
