This centerpiece depicts Mercury handing over his son Bacchus to the Nymphs in the presence of a goat, a mythological scene typical of the period.

Mercury, the messenger of the gods, was charged with handing over his son Bacchus to the Nymphs, deities of the forests and waters. Bacchus was a young god of wine and ecstasy, and the Nymphs would care for him and teach him the secrets of nature and creativity.
