This striking 1923 linocut (60 × 45 cm including frame) is an exceptional example of Hans Haffenrichter’s early graphic work, created during the years he was closely associated with Bauhaus circles. Printed on delicate, lightly toned Japan paper, Tanzschild (“Dance Shield”) presents a bold, rhythmic abstraction constructed from interlocking black forms and dynamic curving lines. The composition reflects Haffenrichter’s interest in movement, formal reduction, and the expressive potential of graphic contrast—core concerns of German modernism in the early 1920s.

The work is signed lower left and stamped on the verso, and is considered a unique impression, characteristic of the artist’s small-batch linocut practice. Condition is very good for its age: the Japan paper shows natural warm toning and minor age traces, but remains stable and free of restoration. Presented in a modern frame with archival mount.
