As a Brooklyn native, Katie Merz’s art is an embodiment of the city’s vibrant energy, capturing the fluidity and authenticity of urban life. Katie’s creative process revolves around simplifying daily experiences into accessible visuals. This ability to distill life’s complexities into clarity mirrors.
Katie Mertz was a Drawing Professor at Cooper Union from 2005-2018. She has also been working as a fine artist for over 30 years, Site specific interior design commissioned works on interior spaces as well as. large-scale public art commissions are some recent projects.
Her signature styled, densely-packed glyph patterns create complex, non-linear narratives that can cover a building and conjure up long stories about what makes a place. Her abstract paintings demonstrate an equal respect for pure line, and steer her message from literal narrative toward a kind of atmospheric poetry.
