The figures are typically identified as the Tang Dynasty monk Tang Sanzang and his three powerful disciples who protect him on his pilgrimage to the "Western Regions" (India) to obtain sacred Buddhist scriptures.
The figures are including the monk Tang Sanzang on a white horse, the central figure of the story, who is a devout and determined monk. He is shown in his monk's robes, sitting atop his white horse. The Monkey King (Sun Wukong) on the rock above, a clever, powerful, and mischievous character who was trapped under a mountain until the monk freed him. He is depicted with his signature staff, standing on a cloud or rock formation. The pig spirit Zhu Bajie on the left, a character who was banished from heaven and has a pig-like appearance. He is generally depicted as having an appetite for food and women. And Sha Wujing , the third disciple, often portrayed as a quiet and reliable character. He is seen seated in the foreground of the figurine.
