Executed with impressive weight and precision, the bench combines monumental presence with an intimate human scale. The surface features a light whitewash finish that highlights the natural grain of the wood and softens its mass. This subtle chromatic intervention was most likely developed together with Wim van Hoof, the artist who collaborated closely with De Jong and Dom Hans van der Laan on interior color schemes for their architectural projects. The surface treatment creates a quiet luminosity that enhances the proportions and form of the piece. Characteristic copper nails, used both structurally and decoratively, punctuate the horizontal boards with a rhythmic precision that underscores the bench’s construction.
