Dimensions: height 21 cm, width 16 cm, depth 10 cm.

The large golden eyes, black snout and stylised lines around the brows and whiskers give the mask an alert, almost comical expression. In Japan, the fox is associated with the rice deity Inari and often appears as a playful spirit during festivals and matsuri – exactly the kind of mask that would be worn in parades and celebrations.

On the inside, the papier-mâché structure is clearly visible, with a red brush mark by the maker. The surface shows a nicely aged patina with light signs of use, consistent with its age and function.

Wonderful as a playful accent among other Japanese objects, above a sideboard or in a child’s room – a graphic, characterful mask that instantly brings a touch of festival and folklore atmosphere into your interior. See less
