Origin murano period 1970s designer alfredo barbini (murano, 1912 – 2007) was one of the protagonists of murano glass in the twentieth century. Born into a family of glassmakers, he entered the furnace at a very young age and quickly developed an exceptional control of the material. Between the 1940s and 1950s, working first for seguso and then in his own glassworks, he developed a personal style: compact masses of sommerso glass, zoomorphic and abstract forms crossed by an internal light that defines a sort of vitreous sculpture. His contribution is twofold. On the one hand, he renews the murano tradition without breaking it, bending classical techniques to a modern sensibility; on the other, he gives the objects an almost narrative character, transforming fish, birds and stylized figures into crystallized micro-stories. It is this synthesis of artisan hand and plastic vocation that made barbini a central figure in the transition of glass from a decorative artefact to a true artistic medium of the 20th century.
