This charming mid-century wooden horse was purchased in Okinawa in the 1970’s and reflects the colorful hand-painted folk-art traditions of the Ryukyu Islands. The body is cut from a solid block of wood and decorated with bingata-influenced floral and wave motifs, accented with dot patterns.
The mane and tail are made from natural bristle, a distinctive material commonly used by Okinawan craft workshops producing handmade pieces for U.S. base gift shops after WWII.
The horse has wonderful personality and bold color, making it a standout decorative object for a bookshelf, entry table, or folk-art collection. It displays beautifully from all angles and remains in good vintage condition with light wear consistent with age.
