Atmospheric, hand-thrown Japanese vase in Bizen-yaki stoneware, designed for ikebana or a strong, sculptural flower arrangement in Japanese style.
Dimensions: height 20 cm, width 14 cm, depth 14 cm.
The vase is made from coarse, iron-rich clay and left unglazed, allowing the natural texture and colour variations of the Bizen firing process to remain beautifully visible. The warm reddish-brown tone is interrupted higher up on the shoulder by lighter ash deposits, reminiscent of goma and sangiri effects from traditional wood-fired kilns.
Around the shoulder several openings have been cut – including hexagonal and clover-like shapes – which give the silhouette a sense of lightness and rhythm, while also providing playful points to guide branches or flowers through in an ikebana arrangement.
On the underside there is an incised potter’s signature, indicating an individual studio piece from the 1960s–70s.
The vase has a distinct, almost sculptural presence: stunning with a few rough branches or dried flowers, but also purely decorative as a standalone ceramic object in a stylish, minimalist interior.
