Expressive Japanese wooden bear sculpture, inspired by the Ainu tradition from Hokkaido.
Dimensions: height 30 cm, width 55 cm, depth 29 cm.
The bear – often referred to in Japanese as kibori no kuma (木彫りの熊) – is shown low to the ground, with open jaws and spread claws, as if it is just about to take a step forward. The fur is carved with short, rhythmic gouge strokes, giving the surface a lively texture that catches the light. The mouth, teeth and tongue are left in a lighter tone, adding extra tension to the expression.
The sculpture stands on a flat wooden display base with decorative carving marks along the edge. This type of work developed in the 20th century in Hokkaido, where the Ainu – the indigenous people of the north – regard the bear (kimun kamuy, “god of the mountains”) as a sacred animal.
The condition is good, with some age-related wear and light signs of use visible in the photos, which enhance the character of the piece. An impressive hand-carved object that immediately draws attention on a sideboard, low cabinet or as part of a collection of Japanese folk art.
