Dimensions: height 3 cm, width 23 cm, depth 23 cm.

One tray is finished in a deep black glaze, the other in a warm cream glaze. Across both run broad, rhythmic bands of red-brown clay, as if drawn in a single flowing motion. This kind of free brush or glaze work is reminiscent of expressive mingei pieces and gives the trays a distinctly handmade, graphic character.

In Japan, this type of tray would be used as kaku-zara (square plates) for serving shared dishes such as sashimi, grilled vegetables, tempura, sushi, wagashi or fruit. They also work beautifully as charger plates, cheese or dessert plates, or as small trays for tea ceremony or coffee with something sweet.

In a contemporary interior, they are strong decorative pieces that look beautiful even when left empty on a table, kitchen island or sideboard. The set is in good condition, with only light signs of use consistent with age and handling. See less
