Walter Melville ‘Mel’ Fowler (1921-1987) was a listed American-Texas artist known for his cubist inspired abstracts. Known more as a sculptor, he created the popular Liberty Hill Sculpture Garden, in Austin, TX.
This drawing is of the buildings and hills of Lisbon, Portugal. Fowler traveled Europe for inspiration and eventually purchased a home in Italy.
Fowler attended The University of Texas, and served as a career officer and fighter pilot in the USAF for 31 years seeing action in WW2, Korea and Vietnam. He received the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, three Distinguished Flying Cross medals and numerous other awards and decorations. He retired as a lieutenant colonel and pursued a second career in the area of art.
Fowler, was married to Catherine Childs, also an artist. Together, they maintained studios in Texas, New York and Italy. Together they restored a 10th century home in Pomezzana, Italy, near Pisa, where he died.
Piece is not framed, but has been protected from light and dust. This item will be shipped flat or rolled for the best protection.
