The bear was revered by the Tlinglits because Indian folklore credited the bear with teaching the Tlingit's how to catch salmon. This one is executed on a dark gray wool blanket, meticulously decorated with pearlescent buttons and navy blue and red appliqués. Definitely a unique one-of-a-kind piece, it was one of several found in a trunk stored away in a trunk a few years ago. This unique style of Tlingit blanket originated in Alaska and the Northwest Coast in the 19th century incorporating materials brought in with explorers and traders from the continent. This one is a later creation--based on the wool blanket and the buttons used, it probably dates from the mid-20th century. The maker is unknown but it came from a collection of Indian artifacts, so it may have been acquired many years ago. Given its age, it is in a remarkable state of preservation, with only minor moth damage that can be seen above the head of the bear. In any case, it is a remarkable piece of artistry that would be beautiful on any bed or displayed on the wall. See less
