Selling two beautiful antique German Biedermeier armchairs with gilded bronze sphinxes supporting each arm, complimented by Ormolu wreaths and stars and neoclassical scenes across the back. Upholstery is fresh, clean, and unstained. No tears or imperfections. The chairs are fruitwood veneer which became popular in Middle Class German households in 1835. The chairs were inspired by their French counterparts which were significantly smaller in size. The chairs measure: 39" high by 30" wide by 29" deep. The seats measure 18" from the floor, 18.5" in width, and seat depth measure 20."
Veneer chipping can be found on the top rail of only one chair (see pics). If you're a stickler, the veneer on the arms has very minor chips, and there is a scratch to the right of one of the neoclassical scenes. Overall, they are in great shape for almost 190 years.
Purchased from a wealthy, prominent family in St. Louis forty years ago.
