A striking large-scale cinnabar-style lacquer floor vase or umbrella stand, produced by the Beijing Lacquer Factory in the late 20th century. This tall cylindrical vessel is carved in deep relief with luxuriant peony blossoms, layered foliage, and—on one side—a long-tailed pheasant perched on a rocky outcrop, a classic motif symbolizing beauty, refinement, and scholarly elegance.
The carving combines molded forms with hand-finished detailing: look closely at the feather lines, petal veining, and leaf edges, and you’ll see the crisp incised work that elevates it beyond standard export lacquer. The dark brass bands at the rim and base add a subtle contrast to the rich red lacquer and emphasize the piece’s architectural presence.
Originally marketed as a decorative floor vase, brush-pot–inspired decor, or umbrella stand, this piece will bring bold color, texture, and sculptural height to an entryway, study, or any living space in your home that calls for a dramatic focal point.
JUNE'S THOUGHT'S
I’ll admit it—I bought this one because it grabbed me from across the room. The scale, the carving, the deep lacquer red… it has presence. And once home, I realized how easy it is to style: in a foyer for umbrellas, beside a console filled with tall branches, or simply as a standalone sculptural object.
COLLECTOR'S NOTE
Produced during the late 20th century at the Beijing Lacquer Factory, this large cinnabar-style vessel reflects a transitional moment in Chinese decorative arts—when traditional lacquer-carving techniques were adapted to modern materials and export tastes. The bold floral panels and pheasant perched on a rocky outcrop were molded in high relief, then selectively refined by hand, a method characteristic of higher-quality factory work of the period.
While not antique cinnabar carved layer-by-layer in the classical manner, these factory-era pieces are increasingly appreciated as the last generation of large-scale Chinese lacquer production. With the original Beijing workshops now closed and lacquerwork shifting to small artisan studios, vessels of this size and complexity are no longer made today, lending vintage examples renewed appeal for collectors and decorators alike.
