Offered for sale is a lovely 19th century oil painting on canvas after the original "The Cumaean Sibyl" by Giovanni Francesco Romanelli. During the 19th century, artists would copy classical works as part of their education. This is a particularly beautiful and fine quality painting of the Cumaean Sibyl. The original painting, depicting a sibyl (prophetess) with a book, is in the collection of the Museo Nazionale di Capodimonte, Naples. Sibyls were mythical priestesses in ancient Greece and Rome who were later incorporated into Christian tradition as foretellers of Christ's coming.
The painting's style uses rich colors and detailed drapery, characteristic of the Baroque period.
