Discovered on our recent Parisian antiquing adventure, this enchanting chocolate pot embodies the refined elegance of Vienna's golden age of porcelain production. Created at the prestigious Royal Porcelain Manufactory (Wiener Porzellanmanufaktur) in the early 19th century, this intimate serving piece tells a story of imperial craftsmanship and romantic Austrian sensibility.
The hand-painted floral decoration features delicate roses and rose sprays rendered in a naturalistic style that showcases the artistry of Vienna's finest porcelain painters. Rose-colored banding at the neck and lid provides elegant contrast, while the whimsical pear-shaped finial is adorned with meticulously hand-painted leaves. The graceful spout is designed for smooth pouring of rich chocolate, and the piece bears authentic Vienna marks: an underglaze blue beehive with overglaze number "3" in lavender.
Dimensions: Approximately 4½" diameter x 8" height. Perfect capacity for two servings.
Condition: Exceptional preservation - a testament to careful handling over two centuries. This piece has survived intact with its original beauty unmarred, making it increasingly rare in today's market.
Historical Significance: The Vienna Porcelain Manufactory, established in 1718, was the second oldest porcelain manufacturer in Europe after Meissen. Pieces from the early 19th century represent the height of their artistic achievement, when the factory enjoyed imperial patronage and attracted the finest painters and craftsmen.
This chocolate pot speaks to the Biedermeier sensibilities of early 19th-century Vienna - a time when intimate domesticity and refined entertaining were highly prized in the decorative arts. Hot chocolate service was an essential ritual in Viennese society, representing elegance and sophisticated hospitality.
A piece this fine, with such distinctive features and impeccable condition, represents both historical significance and timeless beauty - the essence of what makes antique porcelain so enduringly collectible. Perfect for collectors of Vienna porcelain, lovers of romantic European antiques, historic chocolate service enthusiasts, or anyone who appreciates museum-quality craftsmanship.
