A delightful handcrafted ceramic winged pig piggy bank from the celebrated pottery region of Tonalá, Jalisco, Mexico. This imaginative figure is signed Ortega, representing the work of the Ortega family, who are well known for their playful and expressive barro betus creations.
Gerardo Ortega, along with his brothers Oscar and Junior, has spent more than twenty years shaping and hand painting figures like this one. Their work continues a multigenerational tradition learned from their grandmother, who practiced the classic barro betus technique. Betus pieces are distinguished by their vivid colors, polished surfaces, and the use of resin in the finishing process, which gives them their recognizable sheen and warmth.
This charming pig features stylized wings, hand painted details, and the characteristic spirited personality seen in the Ortega family’s folk art. It functions as a bank with a coin slot on top, and also displays beautifully as a decorative sculptural accent.
A wonderful addition for collectors of Mexican folk pottery, lovers of Tonalá ceramics, or anyone drawn to joyful and imaginative handmade pieces.
