Leedsware Classical Creamware Covered Pierced Chestnut Basket and Stand,
20th Century
The covered creamware basket has elaborate openwork or "reticulated" (pierced) patterns on both the bowl and the dome-shaped lid. There are rope-like handles on the bowl, with applied flower and leaf terminals where they attach. The lid is topped with a knob in the form of a pine or fir cone.
Historically, these baskets were used for serving hot roast chestnuts, as the openwork allowed them to "breathe". They are also used for serving desserts or fruits. This piece was made a fine decorative object
Mark: On the underside of the stand "LEEDSWARE CLASSICAL CREAMWARE ENGLAND".
Dimensions: Covered Bowl: 11 inches high x 10 inches diameter. Stand: 12-1/2 inch diameter
