Created around 1830, the engravings depict several varieties of Pinguicula (Butterwort), Utricularia (Bladderwort), Lycopus europaeus (Water Horehound), and two elegant Salvia species. Each plate combines fine copperplate engraving with original hand coloring, showing delicate blues, violets, greens, and bright yellows that give the group a refined and cohesive decorative character. The first plates show Pinguicula vulgaris and another Butterwort variety, both valued by collectors for their unusual carnivorous nature and graceful violet flowers. Several Utricularia species follow, easily recognized by their bright yellow blossoms and finely branched stems. These plants have long fascinated botanists for their microscopic underwater traps, and their presence in this collection adds scientific interest as well as visual charm. The set is completed by a detailed plate of Lycopus europaeus, with its layered architectural foliage, and two handsome Salvia plates showing the characteristic upright bloom spikes and textured leaves of the genus. Together, these eight engravings form a visually harmonious set with consistent paper tone, similar plate-mark impressions, and balanced vertical composition. When framed as a group—whether in two rows of four or in a modern grid—they create an elegant botanical display ideal for both contemporary interiors and classic natural history settings. Condition Report: Good condition with natural age toning and minor foxing. Paper retains its original early nineteenth-century texture and all sheets show clear plate marks. Light edge wear consistent with age; no major tears or losses. Excellent for framing. Framing Tips: These botanicals pair well with thin gold, brass, or natural wood frames. A warm white or ivory mat brightens the paper tone and highlights the fine hand coloring. Double matting can enhance depth and draw attention to the plate marks. Technique: Copperplate engraving with original hand coloring Maker: James Sowerby, London, c.1830 See less
