The first four plates depict several species of Lemna, commonly known as duckweed—tiny floating aquatic plants shown here in exceptional detail, including Lemna trisulca, Lemna minor, Lemna gibba, and the larger and visually striking Lemna polyrhiza. These engravings capture the minute structures of these plants with remarkable clarity, from delicate rootlets to flowering structures rarely observed in nature. The second half of the set features four graceful Valerian species, including Valeriana rubra, Valeriana officinalis, and related varieties. These plants are shown in full bloom with graceful, domed flower heads in soft rose and lilac tones, contrasted with their detailed foliage and fine linework. Valerian has long been valued both ornamentally and medicinally, and these plates highlight the plant’s botanical elegance as well as its historical significance. Together, the eight engravings form a visually cohesive ensemble, with matching paper tone, clear plate marks, and consistent vertical composition. The contrast between the minimal, almost abstract beauty of the duckweed plates and the fuller, richly colored Valerian engravings creates a dynamic and decorative set ideally suited for framing. When arranged in two rows of four, the group provides a harmonious blend of aquatic minimalism and floral abundance, making it suitable for both modern interiors and traditional botanical displays. Condition Report: Good condition overall with natural age toning and occasional foxing. Paper retains its early nineteenth-century character with visible plate marks on each sheet. Minor edge wear consistent with age; no major tears or losses. Suitable for framing. Framing Tips: For a contemporary look, pair these prints with simple light-wood frames and warm white mats to emphasize the delicate green and soft pink tones. For a more classical presentation, thin gilt or dark hardwood frames complement the early botanical style. Double matting can add depth and highlight the engraved plate marks. Technique: Copperplate engraving with original hand coloring Maker: James Sowerby, London, c.1830 See less
