Rare space age directors desk by ernest igl for wilhelm werndl, designed and produced in germany, 1969.
a futuristic design, with a clever rounded shaped construction, with plenty of storage, making the design both functional as interesting. Igl’s initial desk design was one of the first to be made entirely out of polyurethane. The revolutionary concept and grand vision behind this directors desk are evident in its rounded corners, soft edges, and stunning shapes.
this particular model is the most impressive of the ernest igl desk designs, as the name gives away: ‘directors desk”. The model is made in one piece with the iconic shaped drawers on each side, a hidden storage underneath the writing pad area, and the original phone and pen storage department. This phone and pen storage area can be switched out to a plain panel to create more working space or a more minimalistic look when desired (see pictures). The attention to details and comfort in this desk is immaculate, given even the foot of the desk is not just left open, but comes with an angled foot rest, with a built in rug to sit comfortably. This rug is renewed to ensure a fresh and comfortable use for years to come. The desk is designed to be placed freestanding the room, as it is beautiful from each side. Create an impressive work place with this eye catching desk.
ernest igl (1920-2001)
czech modern designer ernest hofmann was born in 1920 in prague. After graduating from the munich academy of visual arts, he founded the igl studio in munich, and he took the designer’s name ernest igl. After world war ii, he worked as a graphic designer, illustrator, and industrial designer.
while information on igl is limited, his 1970s jet desk and other designs have recently found renewed popularity, due to an appearance in the men in black 3 movie (2012), where a re-edition by us company steel case was used in the mib headquarters in a bright orange edition and has become a true collectors item.
