Marco Marcola (Verona, 1711 - 1780)
Carnival Scene with Harlequin and Commedia dell'Arte Masks
Oil on canvas
60 x 82 cm - Framed 77 x 100 cm.
The canvas reflects the typical Venetian style, and the artist, in both the scene's theme and pictorial style, is influenced by Tiepolo's culture, particularly by the Veronese master Marco Marcola (Verona, 1740 – 1793), an Italian painter of the Rococo period from a renowned family of artists. He trained in the studio of his father Giovanni Battista (Verona, 1711 - 1780), along with his brothers Nicola, Francesco, and his sister Angela, becoming protagonists of the Veronese artistic world of the late 18th century.
The subject and style are typical of Marcola's repertoire: a scene filled with characters in carnival attire, including Harlequin, Colombina, Brighella, and Doctor Balanzone, depicted in joyful and festive poses.
These are masks from the ancient Commedia dell'Arte, a theatrical genre celebrated during the traditional Carnival, the pivotal event that made Venice famous, combining the city's charm with the power of theater. Today, as in the past, the shows were improvised by masked actors in the streets and squares.
Marco's initial work focused on decorating villas in the Verona area, as evidenced by the frescoes of Palazzo Allegri in Verona and Villa Canossa in Grezzano, where he left some of his most delightful images of everyday life.
But subjects that immortalized the city of Venice with its masks and celebrations, especially those of a carnival nature, were also popular, as documented, for example, by "Preparations for Carnival" (Palazzo Pellegrini a Santa Cecilia, Verona) or the series of four canvases "Harlequins" (Carlo Schmidl Civic Theatre Museum).
