This is Mother-of-Pearl ornamented black lacquer furniture. The three pieces are a set. Their design motif is “The Ideal World … Read more This is Mother-of-Pearl ornamented black lacquer furniture. The three pieces are a set. Their design motif is “The Ideal World of Immortal Life.” The center piece (Sabang Takja) displays mythical animals, such as the Phoenix, Cranes, Turtle, and other mythical creatures being surrounded by paradisiacal nature, which symbolizes the immortal’s ideal world. The two side pieces (Moongarb) reflect immortals living in the countryside peacefully with beautiful nature and living harmoniously with their family and friends that the overall motif symbolizes the ideal world of immortal life. However, three pieces are fully decorated with pairs of mythical and actual animals which symbolize conjugal love. Therefore, these pieces were bought as wedding gifts for their children from parents wishing for their matrimonial blessing.

They all have a fairly decent amount of Mother-of-Pearl decorations on surface. The colors of the Mother-of-Pearl change throughout the day by different shades of lighting presented to them. When the sunlight hits them, they look the most gorgeous since they reflect various colors. They are for decoration as art works. They have an artist’s philosophy of creation and quality of workmanship which are different from ordinary Mother-of-Pearl utility types of furniture. The quality of Mother-of-Pearl used in these pieces is excellent. The colors and details of the Mother-of-Pearl the artist worked with are amazingly elegant. They are for decoration rather than for utility. Thus, their beauty can be appreciated.

They were bought in the 1970s from Insadong in Seoul, where South Korean top quality artists’ works and craftsmen’s products are being sold. See less
