A superb and richly decorated Meiji period Japanese cloisonne enamel charger featuring an elaborate scene of two red-crowned cranes amid lush blossoming peonies, chrysanthemums, and multicolored foliage. A finely rendered butterfly hovers above, adding movement and elegance to the composition.
The surface displays a classic early Meiji brocade-style ground, densely patterned with exceptional detail. The reverse is equally ornate, finished with a deep blue floral medallion surrounded by scrolling motifs and stylized blossoms.
The charger shows the high level of technical mastery associated with early Meiji cloisonne workshops, with crisp wirework, vibrant enamels, and a refined palette. A rare decorator’s piece suitable for any serious collector of Japanese enamels or nineteenth-century Asian decorative arts.
• Period: Early Meiji, circa 1880
• Diameter: Approximately 15.5inches
• Condition: Presents beautifully with expected age-related wear consistent with antique cloisonne.
• A striking display piece for wall mounting or stand presentation
This is a substantial and unusual example that combines size, artistry, and rarity.
