A sophisticated pair of Kyoto Satsuma vases from the Kinkozan workshop, made c.1890–1905. Deep cobalt shoulders and bases anchor the composition, while the bodies carry finely painted garden scenes of women reading and making music, contrasted with floral panels of peonies, bamboo and butterflies. Raised gold maple leaves and soft ivory crackle grounds add visual richness without overwhelming the compact scale.
One vase is signed 金光山 (Kinkozan); the second is clearly its companion.
Measurements
Vase 1: Height 12 cm (4.7″), Diameter 8.7 cm (3.4″), Weight 219 g
Vase 2: Height 12.5 cm (4.9″), Diameter 8.7 cm (3.4″), Weight 257 g
Condition
One vase is in excellent original condition. The other has a small rim chip with a discreet professional repair to part of the lip. Across both pieces, the typically fragile gilding on the cobalt remains unusually strong.
