Italian Grand Tour Marble Bust of Augustus Caesar, originally known as Octavian. Augustus was Julius Caesar's great-nephew, and Julius Caesar named him as prime beneficiary and his principal heir before his death. The reign of Augustus initiated an era or imperial peace in which the Roman world was largely free of armed conflict. He is renowned as one of the most remarkable leaders in history. Bust features fine-grained white Carrara marble and depicts the first Roman Emperor Augustus/ Octavian as a youth. The sculpture captures the serene, idealized facial features associated with early Roman imperial portraiture such as smooth planes, controlled expression, and the distinctive swept fringe hairstyle. The original bust is in the Vatican collection and dates from the first century BC.
In today's interiors, this bust adds sculptural gravity and contrast against clean lines and neutral palettes, complements academic or European-inspired decor, and is ideal to place on a pedestal, console, or bookcase.
