BIO:

Jessie Benton Evans Gray is the great-granddaughter of Jessie Benton Evans, a prominent Southwestern artist, and has been painting since she was four years old.

In her landscapes Jessie creates a feeling of awe, of excitement, with her bold brushwork and her vibrant colors. "I respond to what 'looks right' intuitively -- a certain connection or energy between the sky and the earth, a dynamic interplay of forms," she describes. "I rarely think of compositional rules."

Jessie describes herself as a "natureholic." "I feel a spiritual presence in nature," she says. "Immense beauty is always there, even as the backdrop for the starkest of realities -- life and death, played out within it. I try to see it as some God-inspired universal mechanism beyond my comprehension."

Jessie paints outside, on canvases that are often 8-feet wide. "I paint from life," she states, "because the drama of air, sky, earth, wind, smell, sound, and total reality is always so original, alive, and extra-dimensional that its immediacy forces me into discovery and unexpected images that go far beyond what anyone could ever dream up in a studio.
