They feature a wavy rim with sunburst ridges, reminiscent of the shape of a large shell valve, rather than the rim and scallop like most similar plates, a feature that makes our pair particularly rare. The plates are historiated and entirely hand-decorated, one depicting the scene of mucius scaevola, who, to punish himself after the attempted assassination of the etruscan king porsenna and demonstrate his courage before the enemy king, placed his right hand in a burning brazier and let it burn without uttering a cry. This act of valor impressed porsenna, who freed mucius and decided to seek peace with the romans, ending the siege of rome. The other plate depicts a scene with coriolanus, also known as gaius marcius coriolanus, a legendary roman general and politician of the 5th century bc, known for his military courage and aristocratic leanings. After distinguishing himself in the war against the volsci, particularly during the capture of corioli, he acquired the surname "coriolanus." both are signed on the back "a. Rubboli," dated 1938, and include the scene depicted; one is inscribed "muzio scevola" and the other "coriolanus." the pair's dimensions are significant, as they are truly very large.
