Lithograph on wove paper. Signed and dated in the plate. This lithograph by Auguste Raffet, one of France’s most celebrated lithographers of the 19th century, presents a romantic view of the Vorontsov Palace in Crimea, seat of the Count of Woronzoff. The grand neo-Gothic and Moorish-inspired architecture of the château rises in the background, dramatically set against the vast seascape. In the foreground, a group of Tatar figures rest and converse amidst the rugged terrain, providing both scale and ethnographic interest. Raffet’s work is renowned for combining historical fidelity with artistic atmosphere, and here he masterfully captures both the majesty of the landscape and the cultural richness of the Crimean setting. His Crimean lithographs were among the most admired visual records of the region in the mid-19th century. with margins; scattered foxing consistent with age This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker.
