Let me start out by saying that this was just an absolute amazing find!!! Tashiro Shoten has a short but productive history. Primarily producing beautiful, hand painted pieces out of their Yokohama studio. Most pieces were made for export to wealthier buyers, but they had a thriving "novelty" line sold at reduced prices. Established in 1878, it was only in business until 1954. Many pieces were destroyed during the bombings of the factory during WWII. This is a Tashiro Shoten Ltd Japanese porcelain mark. 田代 Japanese ceramic has a long history dating back to the Neolithic period. It is produced differently in each of the 47 prefectures in Japan. This is the reason why ceramics are named after the place of origin. Kutani artists were also part of the design aesthetics, which involved bright colors, intricate designs and overglaze painting. This beautiful stand is a culmination of all the desired techniques of classic Japanese porcelains.
Let's talk about Chrysanthemums! The chrysanthemum, native to East Asia, was first introduced to Japan around the 8th century. Its beauty and symmetry quickly caught the attention of the Japanese aristocracy, who associated the flower with purity, longevity, and rejuvenation. Over time, the chrysanthemum became a symbol of autumn. It was Emperor Go-Toba who first adopted the chrysanthemum as a symbol of power. To this day, the chrysanthemum still is a symbol of royalty, rejuvenation and longevity. This piece symbolizes so much of Japanese heritage and culture.
This piece is large and heavy. An extremely sturdy piece with no damage to the structure. No chips. There are some minor crack lines on the bottom underneath. The piece itself is a wonder of color and style. It is a fusion of many styles, that work all together. The most impressive artistic element of this piece is the individual placement of raised chrysanthemums. The patience and dedication to craft is outstanding. The use of colors both pastel and bright come together with the netting effect and further floral embellishments. Gold flourishes are on the top curled rim, on "netting" and chrysanthemum's petals. I was unable to find a similar pieces, I am thinking this may have been a commission piece or a one off.
A truly spectacular piece of Japanese ceramics.
