Created by the renowned german photographer c.j. Kleingrothe, who worked in medan and is widely considered the most important visual documentarian of sumatra’s colonial plantation era. This large-format plate features three separate photographic views on a single sheet, each capturing different stages of high-grade deli tobacco preparation—an export commodity prized worldwide for cigar wrappers. The upper photographs show tobacco workers pressing and packing cured leaves into export-ready bales; the expansive lower view reveals the structured and expertly ventilated fermentation halls where tobacco was aged in stacked bundles to achieve the color, texture, and pliability required for premium dutch and european cigars. Kleingrothe’s works are valued not only for their striking clarity, but also for their cultural and historic importance—documenting labor systems, architecture, machinery, and plantation life under dutch rule in sumatra. Today, original prints are increasingly scarce and sought after by collectors of southeast asian colonial photography. A powerful centerpiece for interiors with a focus on industrial heritage, asian history, or early photographic works. Condition: excellent original condition for age. Light toning and faint spotting to the wide margins, image area clean and well-preserved. Strong plate mark visible. No tears or major flaws. Unmounted and unframed. Framing suggestions: a thin black or brushed bronze frame with a warm linen or ivory mat will enhance the sepia depth and give the piece museum presence. For a modern look, consider a darker mat that echoes the rich tones of the photogravure. Technique: photogravure maker: c.j. Kleingrothe, medan, c.1900 See less
