The vessel features a rounded copper or bronze alloy body with sculptural side carry handles that have a soft, architectural curve and substantial presence, giving the piece both visual weight and functional balance when carried. The removable pierced metal lid is particularly striking, with radiating vent openings that create an almost lantern-like silhouette. The pierced design allowed heat to safely escape while protecting charcoal embers, and today it gives the piece wonderful sculptural character from every angle. The warmer sits on a wooden base designed to protect surfaces from heat transfer while adding warmth and contrast to the metal body. The interior shows heavy darkening, carbon residue, and heat scale consistent with authentic historical charcoal use, supporting its original function as a hand warmer or small room brazier. Objects of this type were traditionally used to warm hands or small interior spaces using smoldering charcoal, and similar forms were sometimes also used for incense charcoal, overlapping with koro (incense burner) traditions. The metal appears to be a copper or bronze alloy body with a brass or brass-alloy lid, though exact composition has not been formally tested. The piece has developed a beautiful, warm aged patina that highlights its history of use and gives it strong sculptural presence. Pieces like this have a wonderful balance of utilitarian history and decorative impact. The pierced architectural lid, warm metal tones, and wood base create a rich, collected look that works beautifully in layered interiors. Today, this piece would be beautiful styled with potpourri, incense, or simply displayed as a sculptural decorative object. See less
