Le Gout tapestry from the Lady with the Unicorn tapestries series celebrates taste. Each of these most famous of all tapestries depicts one of the senses.
We see the lady taking a sweetmeat from her maid servant while offering some to a parakeet in her left hand. A monkey at her feet grabs fragments as they fall. They are flanked by the iconic lion and unicorn with the raised banners of le Viste family. This fine French wall tapestry is lined and has a rod pocket for easy hanging.
Taste is the central element of the Lady and the Unicorn series, and also the most harmonious.
The composition is based on the principle of inverted perspective. The two poles draw the eye to the center of the work.
A real sense of depth is achieved in this hanging, with the unicorn and lion in the first plane, the next in the second, and the Lady in the third.
Unlike other Lady of the Unicorn tapestries, it’s not the Lady who gives us the meaning of Taste. Instead, it’s the monkey at her feet who brings a delicacy to his mouth.
The young woman simply takes a dragée from the cup. The parakeet on her hand feasts on one of them.
In this tapestry, unlike others, there is no obvious contrast between the dress of the next lady and that of the Lady. In fact, this is a specific feature of the tapestry depicting taste. Both are dressed in light-catching gowns, their hair held in place by a silversmith’s band.
