Bronze sculpture
by vincenzo bentivegna
child with book and hat
origin italy
period early 20th century
author vincenzo bentivegna (sciacca, 1879 – rome, 1943) was a sculptor who was mainly active in rome in the early decades of the 20th century. Little is known about his training and early years, but from 1908 onwards he regularly participated in exhibitions organized by the società amatori e cultori di belle arti (society of fine arts lovers and connoisseurs), presenting figurative sculptures: portraits, female figures, intimate scenes such as mammina (mommy) or la palla (the ball), and the ritratto della contessa pia bracci (portrait of countess pia bracci). In 1911, he took part in the international exhibition in rome with the sculpture madre, while in 1915 he exhibited the bronze nidia at the national art exhibition in brera, milan. His style always remained faithful to the figurative plastic tradition, with a soft and realistic sensibility. Although he is not a very well-known artist today, he was well established in the italian exhibition circuit of his time. He died in rome in 1943.
