The seated woman nurses her child while wearing body tattoos and culturally significant woven garments. The man, holding a long paddle, wears an earring and traditional body markings, suggesting his role within maritime life and palauan navigation culture. The engraving reflects the european documentation of micronesian societies during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, as explorers first visited the palau islands (historically called “pelew islands” in european sources).
