The seated woman nurses her child while wearing body tattoos and culturally significant woven garments. The man, holding a long paddle, wears an earring and traditional body markings, suggesting his role within maritime life and palauan navigation culture. The engraving reflects the european documentation of micronesian societies during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, as explorers first visited the palau islands (historically called “pelew islands” in european sources). This work is part of the notable ethnographic series published by j. Allart in the netherlands, following the enlightenment fascination with pacific island peoples. Signed in the plate: “s. Kuyper, del.” (artist) and “j. Portman, sculpt.” (engraver). A highly collectible print for those interested in oceania, anthropology, and the history of european exploration in micronesia. Condition: very good condition for age. Light toning to margins, a few scattered small spots, minor handling marks near edges. Strong original color and crisp, clean image. Full sheet with wide margins preserved. Framing tips: a natural wood frame complements the tropical subject and warm hand-coloring. Use a lightly toned mat to balance the composition. Uv-protective glazing recommended. Technique: hand-colored engraving maker: j. Allart (publisher), after s. Kuyper, engraved by j.
