A reclining woman enjoys a long-stemmed pipe while a man behind her smokes contentedly, both richly dressed in layered textiles, gold jewelry, and traditional turbans. The patterned wall paneling, detailed carpets, and tea glasses at their side add depth and luxurious atmosphere to the composition. Created by j. Kuyper (artist) and l. Portman (engraver), and published in the netherlands around 1810, this plate formed part of an ethnographic series representing world cultures during the era of european exploration and orientalist fascination. The original hand-coloring remains vivid, with refined tones of red, ivory, and gold enhancing the intimate scene. A striking historic image combining decorative appeal with cultural and anthropological interest — highly collectible for those drawn to north african history, orientalist art, and travel-related prints. Condition report: very good condition for age. Minor toning and light handling marks in the margins. Image area clean and bright. No fold lines or major defects. Ready to frame. Framing tips: a gilded frame pairs beautifully with the ornate setting and gold details in the clothing. A warm white mat highlights the soft hand-coloring.
