The seated woman wears a richly draped blue garment, necklaces, bracelets, and gold earrings, while the man — wearing a yellow mantle — gestures toward her in conversation. Behind them, a vivid rural landscape features rice fields, palm trees, cattle, and distant mountains, conveying the lush environment of madagascar. This engraving forms part of a notable enlightenment-era publication documenting diverse cultures around the world during the height of european exploration. Though seen through a european artistic lens, the image remains an important historic reference for traditional clothing and malagasy life at the turn of the 19th century. Signed in the plate: “s. Kuyper del.” (artist) and “j. Portman sculp.” (engraver). Published in the netherlands by j. Allart, c.1800. Highly collectible for those with interests in african culture, early anthropology, and decorative hand-colored engravings. Condition: very good condition for age. Light toning to sheet with a few minor spots and soft handling marks primarily in margins. Image clean with vivid original hand-coloring and excellent plate detail. Full sheet with wide margins preserved. Framing tips: a natural or dark wood frame enhances the tropical palette. A cream or lightly warm mat will make the colors appear even richer.
