It was produced in amsterdam around 1805 as part of the important dutch publication “de mensch, zoo als hij voorkomt op den bekenden aardbol” (“humankind as found on the known globe”), written by martinus stuart with illustrations by jaques kuyper. The scene depicts a family near a fire beside domed dwellings constructed from natural materials. The standing figure holds a spear and a traditional shield decorated with geometric motifs, while body paint highlights cultural identity and ceremonial significance. The lush tropical landscape and warm colors create a vivid atmosphere of daily life in northern australia prior to widespread european settlement. The original hand-coloring remains strong and detailed throughout. This series represents one of the earliest dutch efforts to portray world cultures in an ethnographic context, based on exploration reports and early anthropological interest. Today, the prints are valued both for their artistry and for providing historical visual documentation of indigenous cultures before major colonial disruption. A significant and compelling print for collectors interested in australian history, early ethnography, or global exploration imagery. A strong decorative piece as well. Condition: good for age. Wide margins remain. Minor age toning and some light handling marks mainly in the blank margin area. Excellent impression with bright original hand-coloring. Framing tips: a warm white museum mat with a dark wood or textured frame will complement the earthy palette. A float mount to display the full sheet and plate mark is recommended. Technique: hand-colored copper engraving maker: jaques kuyper (del.), engraved by portman publisher: johannes allart, amsterdam, c.1805 publication: de mensch, zoo als hij voorkomt op den bekenden aardbol See less
