The scene shows two individuals engaged in daily activities near water, surrounded by lush tropical vegetation and traditional thatched architecture. The foreground figure kneels by the riverbank while fishing with a small hand net, dressed in a light draped garment and sandals. Behind him, another figure is carving or shaping an object with notable craftsmanship, adorned with beads and a cloth wrap. The mandingue people are one of the largest and most historically significant ethnic groups in west africa, primarily located across present-day mali, guinea, senegal, and the gambia. Renowned for their long heritage of trade, craftsmanship, and the rich legacy of the mali empire, the mandinka culture has influenced art, music, and oral tradition throughout the region. The engraving presents a romanticized european perspective typical of the period, yet it offers valuable insight into early 19th-century ethnographic documentation and cultural interpretation. Subtle stipple engraving combined with refined watercolor wash creates depth and detail—particularly in the organic landscape and textures of the attire. This original sheet retains generous margins and the printed title “mandinguezen” beneath the image. A fine and collectable example for those interested in african history, early ethnography, or hand-colored engravings of the age of exploration. Condition: good original condition for age. Light age toning to wide margins, minor scattered spots. Image clean and colors strong. Plate mark visible. Framing tips: a natural linen or cream mat pairs beautifully with the warm tones of the hand-coloring. A dark wood frame—walnut or ebony—will create a refined presentation suitable for gallery walls, african art collections, or travel-themed décor. Technique: hand-colored engraving maker: j. Arriens (del.) / j. Vorman (sculp.), europe, c.1810 See less
