A man holding spears gestures toward the distance, while a woman carries an infant wrapped in a fur garment and holds a woven basket. Both figures are adorned with traditional beadwork and body decorations, reflecting cultural practices of the time. The printed title below the image uses the term “caffers,” which is now recognized as derogatory and historically tied to colonial language. Today, this engraving holds importance as a record of european encounters with indigenous south african communities and the ways in which they were depicted and documented during the enlightenment era. Signed in the plate: “s. Kuyper del.” (artist) and “j. Portman sculp.” (engraver). Published by j. Allart in the netherlands around 1800. A significant piece for collectors of african cultural history, early anthropology, and colonial-era printed works. Condition: good condition consistent with age. Light paper toning, minor foxing and stains in margins, faint handling creases. Image remains clean and colors well preserved, with a strong plate impression. Framing tips: a warm-toned frame (walnut or natural wood) complements the earthy palette and subject matter. A soft cream or tan mat highlights the hand-coloring. Uv-protective glazing is recommended. Technique: hand-colored engraving maker: j. Allart (publisher), after s. Kuyper, engraved by j.
